Wilford Robert Gardner (1925-) was born in Logan, Utah. He served in World War II, both in Europe and the Pacific. Gardner received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1953 in physics and soil physics mathematics. He taught at University of Wisconsin, Madison (1966-1980), University of Arizona, Tucson (1980-1994), and between 1987 and 1994 he served as Dean of the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley.
